AWARE CISM Team

A Way to Address Reaction to Emergencies

AWARE CISM Team is a crisis intervention and wellness program for not-for-profit human service agencies in Ulster County.

Critical Incidents:

Any type of situation faced by personnel which causes them to experience unusually strong emotional reactions which have the potential to interfere with their ability to function effectively either at the time or later.

The Critical Incident Stress Management Program is an organized, comprehensive, and thoughtful approach to deal with preventing, reducing, and controlling harmful stress symptoms resulting from a critical incident.

Some causes of Critical Incident Stress are:

  • Unusually distressing sights and sounds.
  • Emotional identification with victim.
  • Prolonged event or trauma.

Critical incidents may produce a wide range of stress symptoms, which can appear immediately at the scene, a few hours later or even weeks after the event. Stress symptoms usually occur in four different categories: cognitive (thinking), physical (body), emotional (feelings) and behavioral (actions). The more traumatic the incident, the more powerful impact the stress reaction may have on the individual.

For more information about CISM or to contact the AWARE Team, call (845) 339-9090, ext .110 or (845) 336-4747, Ext. 136.
