COMPEER Program
The COMPEER program serves people recovering from a mental illness. The program matches volunteers from the community with clients and encourages them to develop a one on one relationship based on friendship and support. The program is considered an adjunct to therapy because the client, volunteer, and program coordinator work together to achieve goals established by the client and the clinician. The program provides the volunteer with training, a personalized match, a quarterly newsletter, ;social activities and continuous professional support. The goals of the program are; to encourage a nurturing relationship of friendship and support, to establish a sense of confidence in coping with the complexities of everyday life, to bring forth unique talents and abilities through social and educational programs, to ignite a sense of awareness and understanding about mental illness through involvement in community activities and to prevent re-hospitalization of the consumers in the program. Both the Ulster and Schoharie programs have active pen pals and phone calling componets.
During the Compeer training, volunteers learn about the strengths, needs, and opportunities of persons diagnosed with a mental illness. Compeer volunteers are advocates for their friends and encourage and support their recovery. This successful program has been in our agency since 1983. The Compeer Program in Ulster County is located at the Clifford Beers Center in Kingston, New York (845 339 9090 x 110).
