THE GERIATRIC SOCIAL CLUBS The MHA's first OMH direct service contract began in 1978 with a geriatric social club program in Plattekill. Today, 90% of the participants live in a community residence or family care setting. 45% of the individuals receive medical and psychiatric services through Hudson River Psychiatric Center, 35% of the participants receive medical and psychiatric services through the FDR Veterans Hospital at Montrose or the Albany VA, and 20% receive services through Ulster County Mental Health Services.
Our staff participate in team treatment meetings which are vital for setting individual goals with members and designing treatment approaches to maintain and enhance their community skills. Consumers live in Ellenville, Plattekill, High Falls, Kingston and Lake Hill. Program met Tuesday through Friday at the Clifford Beers Center. 95 persons with CSS eligibility participated in 2001.
· Kingston Program: In 2001, members began visiting different Kingston nursing homes once a month. Consumers visited six area nursing homes during the Valentine, Easter, Summer, Halloween. Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday times. Participants also volunteered at the Kingston Maritime Center, the YWCA and for the MHA. The participant, who are residents of Ellenville, delivered anemones in that area. Forty members participated in the Introspective unit while others attended the Clerical Unit. Members were recognized by the Albany Avenue Nursing Home for their positive volunteer efforts. Another group worked with local historians in exploring local towns and villages in Ulster County.
· Gardiner Program: In 2001 four participants passed away and three people moved to Duchess County. For the first time Gardiner was without a waiting list. All are very interested in the arts and cinema. They visited galleries, went on a monthly movie outing, focused on exercise and nutrition, and attended multicultural opportunities offered by members, staff and volunteers. As Spanish is the first language of many participants, interested staff and members continue to learn this language through a Spanish speaking MHA staff member.
· High Falls Program: In July 2001, residents of Rothstein's Community Residence were placed in residential programs throughout the county in anticipation of the September closing of the Rothstein's Community Residence. Nine of the twelve participants from this residence continue in our program.
