Harbour House - (Teaching Family Model Program):
The Harbour House Program is one of two unique Teaching Family Model programs existing in New York State. The Mental Health Association is utilizing this program model in three separate sites (Community Residences), located in Sullivan, Schenectady, and Ulster Counties, all of which became successfully operational and viable in 1995.
The Harbour House Program is designed to therapeutically accommodate four youngsters in each of the three Community Residences, for a program capacity of twelve. Children are referred by mental health clinics, psychiatric hospitals, social services individual families and residential treatment facilities. This program is also designed as an alternative to the more restrictive, costly elements of institutional placement or psychiatric hospitalization.
Each home is professionally staffed with a live-in teaching parent couple and staff trained in the "teaching family model". In addition, the consumers access local community educational, recreational, and clinical/therapeutic resources. All consumers in the program receive an extensive array of intensive case management, special education, and individual therapy to aid in their continued and productive integration into the community and eventually, if possible, back into biological homes.
