MENTAL RETARDATION/DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES SERVICES (MR/DD):

RESPITE, ADVOCACY AND HEALTH (RAH)
The RAH program began through the collaborative efforts of the YMCA, YWCA, Gateway Industries, Ulster Association of Retarded Citizens, and the Mental Health Association in 1974. It provides supports and services through program activities that enhance the personal, educational, recreational and socialization skills of program participants. A variety of activities are offered five to seven evenings per week and are planned by the consumers through its formal planning council. In 2001, over 130 people at each event attended three dinner dances.

    · Monday Bowling remains one of the most popular activities. In its 24th year, this evening activity is training ground for the athletes participating in Special Olympics. An average of 25 persons attended weekly.

    · The Ellenville Program is also held Tuesday afternoons at Pilot Industries, Ellenville. The parents requested this program. Fourteen consumers participate on a weekly basis.

    · Wednesday Night Dinner continues to be an evening of socialization with friends. Aside from the dinner, there are ongoing sessions of music, theater arts, poetry, crafts, games, community presentations and holiday celebrations. An average of 80 diners attend weekly.

    · Thursday is the New Paltz program, consisting of weekly van trips. An average of twelve people attended weekly. The Outreach Music Program at Palmer Center discontinued this year as there was conflict of time with that UGARC residence.

    · Saturday, The Clubhouse met monthly throughout the year. Over 30 persons attended each session. Movies, games and lunch were all part the twelve sessions held at the Clifford Beers Center.

    · Special Events and Parties: Twelve special events and parties were part of this busy year. Van trips rounded out the myriad of activities planned by the consumers, for the consumers. This RAH program component provided over 1200 face to face contact to persons in 2001.

WEEKEND DAY RESPITE
Evening and weekend respite to families while providing therapeutic socialization, recreation and education opportunities to their adult children living at home. Up to six members travel at a time to local sites of interest or join together for classes in community living skills in areas such as personal hygiene, money management, mobility training and bridging activities. Support is provided for young adults transitioning into adult services after graduating from high school. Support is again given to those who may be moving from their parent's home into a more independent setting. There are evening programs offered weekdays which were more widely attended than the weekends in 2001. Participants and staff convene monthly at the first Wednesday night dinner in order to plan and write the schedule for the following month. Thirty-five members and their families participated in this program in 2001.

VACATION TRAVEL CLUB
This very popular program component of RAH began in 1982. The goal of this program is to assist persons in planning and facilitating opportunities in vacation travel. It is aggressive in overcoming physical overt and covert obstacles related to traveling and looks toward creative ways to get the most for one's money. Other supported travel is cost prohibitive for most persons, reserved for those who can afford it. 102 persons traveled to destinations that included a cruise to Bermuda, Ashokan Field Campus in New Paltz for the annual camping trip, Cancun, Mexico; Montreal, Quebec and Lake George.
